Dr. Malachi Edwin Vethamani |
| | Dr. Malachi Edwin Vethamani obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in English Literature and Master in Education in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from University of Malaya and a doctorate in Literature in English from the University of Nottingham, England. He is a recipient of the Chevening Award (1993-1996) and the Fulbright Scholarship (2000). He is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Educational Studies, University Putra Malaysia. He is President of the Malaysian English Language Teaching Association (MELTA). Dr. Vethamani has researched widely in the area of teaching literature in English and Malaysian Literature in English. He has also written many articles and essays in this area for both local and international publications. |

Mr. Liam Brown |
| | Liam Brown is the London based Training and Development Manager for the English & Exams Division, British Council, responsible for the global Teaching Centre and Exams network. He specialises in areas relating to Teacher Professional Development; Individual and Organisational Learning; Performance Management, Knowledge Management and New Ways of Working in education, with particular reference to the ELT context, speaking and writing on these issues in many countries. He has worked for the British Council as teacher, trainer and manager in Nigeria, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong & Singapore. His paper for the conference is entitled “Reinventing Language Teachers and Learning: the future perfect?” |

Prof. Emeritus Dr. Abdullah Hassan |
| | ABDULLAH HASSAN holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Malay
Linguistics from University of Malaya, Malaysia, and a Ph. D. in General Linguistics from University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He started his academic career in University of Malaya in 1967, and moved to Science University of Malaysia, Penang in 1972. He retired as a Professor of Malay Language in 1997. Shortly after, he was appointed Professor of Communication at International Islamic University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. In 2001 he was again offered to be Professor of Malay Language at Sultan Idris University of Education, a position he holds till now. He has been a British Commonwealth scholar (1969-1972), a Fulbright Fellow (1979), and the Fourth holder of Tun Razak Chair in Ohio University (1987-89). He is an active member of Linguistics Association of Malaysia and Malaysian Translators Association. He is the current President of the latter. He has written 15 books on linguistics, Malay language and grammar, and translated 11. Last August he was appointed as an Emeritus Professor by Science University of Malaysia.
He will be presenting a paper entitled "Developing A Sophisticated Level of Language Proficiency in Malay".

Dr. Scott A. Beck |
| | Scott Beck earned his B.A. in Linguistics at Cornell University and his Ph.D. in Language Education at the University of Georgia. He is an Assistant Professor in the Early Childhood and Middle Grades Education programs at Georgia Southern University. He is also director of the ESOL Endorsement and Education Honors programs there. He has traveled extensively in Mexico and Northwest Africa. He will be presenting a paper on "Progressive Methods of Incorporating Communication, Culture, and Literature into the ESOL Classroom" .

Assoc. Prof Soh Wei Nee |
| | Assoc. Prof. Soh Wei Nee is a lecturer in the Academy of Language Studies, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Shah Alam. She obtained her first degree in Chinese Studies from University Malaya in 1980, her diploma in education from the same university in 1981 and her masters degree in Chinese Studies also from University Malaya in 1983. Her specialisation is in the teaching of Mandarin language from the introductory to advanced levels. She has presented in many conferences, both locally and internationally, and has published many books on Mandarin language teaching and learning, including Mandarin 1 and Malay-Chinese proverbs dictionary. |
